You might think of gardening, going to the beach or spending time with family is what ‘active’ senior citizens do. This group does that. However, they also run FAXtopia.com, an e-commerce company with a programmer, a webmaster, a marketing guy, and a couple of outside vendors.
The company provides an old school service that this group has long term experience with; faxing.
Bob, the sales and marketing guy, lives in a nice beach town in Florida. He became an expert in fax marketing in the 1980s and has loved the industry ever since. He’s actually known as the creator of fax spam. Not his proudest achievement. What had started out as an innovative marketing campaign in the 1980s using fax machines soon got copied by others and spam grew from there. Bob believes that the fax industry is not yet dead. Americans still send many thousands of faxes every day, and there are still plenty of fax machines in service across the country. A fax machine is still the easiest way to scan and send a document in one step. FAXtopia’s business actually grew during the pandemic.
The webmaster, Linda, is a retired school teacher living in the hills of South Carolina. She is an expert at coding websites that rank well in the major search engines. As the requirements for websites change over the years, she keeps everything current and Google compliant.
The main programmer, Charlie, is a Veteran and now is an expert at creating web tools and custom functionality. He hails from Colorado. Thanks to him, the website runs flawlessly. He’s the youngster of the group, but has his grumpy old man moments.
Everyone has been working out of their home offices for the past ten years. We have occasional conference calls, but the company is so well established that it mostly runs itself. And what they have to do to keep up with the latest technology, well, that keeps them young. The group has an occasional get-together, but that’s mostly just for the tax deductions.
Generally, the fax industry has been good to them for the past 10 years. Government regulations for HIPAA compliance has also been a boost for business. They can deliver secure, HIPAA-compliant faxes direct to your inbox.
So, next time you see a group of old people hanging out at the beach, they just might be successful digital nomads traveling the country and discussing upgrades to their e-commerce platform.
